HMS Hermes was a cruiser, built in the 1890s and modified in 1913 as a seaplane carrier. In 1914 she was used to ferry equipment to France. Leaving Dunkirk on 31st October 1914 she was spotted and torpedoed by the German submarine U-27 and sank in the Straits of Dover with the loss of 44 men, one of whom was Tom Collier.
